How to choose a digital marketing agency in Romania

Romania has hundreds of digital marketing agencies, from one-person freelancers to large networks. Choosing the wrong one costs more than their fee — it costs months of lost growth. Here's a practical framework for choosing a partner, whether you're a local business or an international company entering the market.

1. Start with your goal, not their service list

Before you talk to any agency, write down one sentence: what should marketing achieve in the next 12 months? More qualified leads? Profitable online sales? Brand awareness in a new region? A good agency will ask about your goal, margins and customer value before recommending channels. If the first call is a pitch for a package, that's a warning sign.

2. Check how they measure success

Ask: "What will you report to me every month?" Strong answers include cost per lead, cost per acquisition, ROAS, organic conversions and revenue attributed to each channel. Weak answers focus only on impressions, reach and likes. Also ask how conversion tracking will be set up — GA4, Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel and Conversions API. An agency that can't explain tracking can't optimise campaigns properly.

3. Look for real language skills

If you sell in Romania, your ads, landing pages and SEO content must be written in natural Romanian — and, in Transylvania, often in Hungarian too. Ask who writes the copy. Machine translation reviewed by a non-native speaker won't rank or convert as well as native writing.

4. Ask who actually does the work

In larger agencies, the senior person on the sales call is often not the person running your campaigns. Ask who will manage your account day to day, what their experience is, and how many other accounts they handle. Direct access to the specialist usually means faster decisions and fewer misunderstandings.

5. Make sure you own your accounts

Your Google Ads account, Meta Business Manager, Google Analytics, Search Console and website should be registered to your company, with the agency receiving admin access. Agencies that run everything from their own accounts make it hard to leave — and you lose your historical data if you do.

6. Understand the pricing model

Common models in Romania include fixed monthly retainers, a percentage of ad spend, project fees for branding or websites, and hybrid models. None is inherently better, but you should know exactly what's included, whether media spend is paid directly by you (it should be), and what the notice period is. Be wary of anyone guaranteeing first place on Google or a specific ROAS before seeing your data.

7. Check for an integrated view

Channels influence each other. Paid search data shows which keywords to target with SEO. Social media builds remarketing audiences. Branding affects click-through rates everywhere. Video is now the most important creative asset in paid social. An agency that understands these connections will spend your budget more efficiently than several specialists working in isolation — even if you only buy one service at first.

8. Ask for examples relevant to you

Case studies are useful, but relevance matters more than logos. Ask for examples in a similar industry, business model (B2B vs B2C, e-commerce vs services) or market. Ask what went wrong in a past project and what they changed — the answer tells you more than a success story.

9. Test with a defined first phase

Instead of signing a long contract immediately, agree on a first phase of two to three months with clear deliverables: an audit, tracking setup, a strategy and the first campaigns or content. You'll see how the agency communicates, how fast it moves and whether its recommendations make sense before committing further.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed results before any audit.
  • No questions about your margins, customers or goals.
  • Ad accounts or domains registered in the agency's name.
  • Reports full of vanity metrics and no revenue data.
  • Cheap bulk link packages presented as "SEO".
  • Machine-translated content for Romanian or Hungarian audiences.

Green flags

  • Honest pushback when a channel or budget isn't a good fit.
  • Clear tracking plan before campaigns launch.
  • Native writers for each target language.
  • You own every account and asset.
  • Monthly reporting tied to business outcomes.
